UPDATE:
Welcome to our new Elk Hills music program! Let me introduce myself to those who are new to our school. I'm Sunny Johnson, and have taught music for over 30 years as a private teacher, through the recreation department, and as a church musician and teacher. I am one of our school's instructional aides, and this school has given me the wonderful opportunity to attend a training this summer in the Orff method, which emphasizes integrating music with the school curriculum. Music can help students with confidence, reading, and even math, so our students are fortunate that our school board is supporting the arts.
We are so happy to be able to offer more instruments and time for music this year. Each class will get to have one hour of music each week! Feel free to come by the school and check out our music room in back of the auditorium.
All of the students will have the chance to sing and learn body percussions, and we will be offering several types of rhythm instruments and xylophones as well. The fourth and fifth-graders will be learning recorder and flutophone, as they did last year. Something new for the recorder students is a fun Recorder Karate program, in which the students can earn colored belts for learning the songs. Sixth-graders will get to learn ukelele as well!
The students will show off what they learn in two programs, the Winter Holiday program in December, and a spring Fiesta, May 18th.
I want to extend a warm welcome and look forward so much to meeting the new students and parents, and to see how much fun the students have with the instruments! Please keep in touch with me and don't hesitate to ask questions. Thank you for letting me teach your kids.
